VS 2005: Inaccessible W2003 guest - keyboard/mouse not responding

Source: microsoft.public.virtualserver
Sent: 05/13/2008
From: jmi
Message:

Bit of a deadlock situation here - we have a virtual guest (Windows 2003 SP2)
that suddenly refuses to respond to keyboard/mouse input, even in safe mode.
Virtual Machine Additions are installed.

The file shares and running processes on the guest are working fine, but any
attempt to take remote control times out (Remote Desktop/Dameware).

Remotely peeking through the event logs works (albeit incredibly slowly),
but there are no error messages that could explain this behaviour.

Copied the guest to another host and did a repair installation of Windows
2003 - worked fine and looked promising until the final boot-up, when the
kbd/mouse stopped responding once again.

Even tried migrating the guest to VMware Server using VM Converter - the
exact same behaviour there as well.

Any suggestions as to how to salvage this situation? Reinstalling the
applications on a fresh server must really be the last resort - this is a
legacy server requiring unknown external consultant hours to migrate...
