Hyper-V/Intel ANS Stuff

This is one of those "me too" posts ... installed 2k8 on Intel motherboard
(like, a real Intel-brand one, not just an Intel chipset) and loaded the
latest Intel network drivers including their VLAN support. Used it to set
up a couple of VLANs like I always do and then bound Hyper-V's switch
protocol to the untagged VLAN 0000.

The Hyper-V VMs could ping each other and the rest of the planet
(literally), and 2k8 could ping the rest of the planet but the VMs and 2k8
couldn't ping each other. Sliced and diced things a variety of ways and
wound up nuking all the Intel VLANs in order to get things to work.

Well, Hyper-V *is* beta so it's not a big surprise. However, Hyper-V's VLAN
stuff doesn't seem to expose multiple VLANs to the parent partition and that
is necessary for all kinds of good reasons.

Microsoft appears to have been pretty insistent over the years that NIC
vendors be the ones to provide VLAN support ... everybody had better figure
out how to play nicely once again real soon now.
