I have a question that has me a bit stumped so I am hopeing to get some
opinions on this. I am trying to virtualize a terminal server in which the
third party vendor has mentioned that their software has not been certified
to run in a virtual environment. My understanding of virtual server
environments is that it is equivalent of running it on an actual physical
computer but that there is an emulation layer between the virtual software
and the physical hardware that allows you to move the VHDs to different hosts
with different base hardware. These VHDs have their own registry, file
structure etc and work independently of the host for the most part as there
is some direct pass through such as the processors and com ports not being
emulated. Should the 3rd party software run any differently on a virtual
environment than it would on a physical server? Does 3rd party software need
to go through software validation to successfully run in a virtual
environment?

I'd have to agree with Bill here. If the software doesn't have a dependency
on something that isn't available in a VM (such as a USB key dongle or TPA,
or similar), then it should "just work". Treat it the same as you would a
physical machine, assigning the same level of resources (RAM, CPU, HD) as
you would a similar system to run this software.

I am in agreement with both of you. I have installed several instances of
virtual server and have had many third party applications run successfully in
terminal server environment with SQL 2005 databases. I am at a point in
which I am dealing with a 3rd party vendor that mentioned that their software
has not been tested in a virtual environment. I am just trying to logically
weight my options to see if proceeding in a test environment will be worth it
in the long run. It will save a considerable amount of money in hardware and
additional software to virtualize this software/terminal server but if I have
road blocks in the future for vendor support then the cost savings up front
may not really be worth it. I have had this headache in the past where 3rd
parties wont even support you until you have everything configured according
to their specifications. My previous experience with virtual server tells me
that this will work but I really dont want to swim against the current on
this one. The test envrionment could work but say 4 months down the road, I
may have something happen in which I am back defending my decision of
installing it in virtual server as that 3rd party will probably be quick to
say it is that that is causing the issue rather than taking the time to do
due diligence to try and go to the root of the problem. I just thought that
I would try and get some feedback for the virtual community to see if anyone
had run into any problems of their software not working as it should upon
putting it in a virtual environment. My thoughts is that if it has been
certified to work properly on Server2003 then it should work just the same as
if it had been installed on Server2003 that has been installed in a virtual
environment.
