Before I go out and test this, can someone tell me off hand if
converting from a fixed disk to dynamic reduces the size of the disk to
the space used, or do I just end up with a dynamic disk of the same
size?

However, if you want the smallest size possible, covert the disk to
dynamically expanding (using the Virtual Server Administration Web site,
VRMC Plus or Ben's script), start the virtual machine, install and run the
PreCompactor tool in the virtual machine, shutdown the virtual machine and
compact the disk.

In Release Notes for Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 see the section "Virtual
Disk Precompactor" and in the Virtual Server 2005 Administration Guide, see
the section Virtual Server Operations Guide, Using Virtual Server, Managing
Virtual Disks, Compacting dynamically expanding virtual hard disks.
