I'm relatively new to virtualization and how the VM works in different
hardware configurations.

Is it possible to run a virtual machine from an external/removable drive? I
have a laptop that I would like to convert to a VHD, then just carry the
drive with me between offices. Is that possible?

Why not just create a new vm fresh? Why go through all the hassle of
imaging the laptop drive? The laptop's hardware will be a problem (vms use
a specific set of emulated devices and cannot use the laptops). You will
also have the licensing problem of using the software on the laptop
simultaneously in a second computer. Since you will need separate licenses
for the OS and software anyway, why not just create a new vm from scratch?

As long as it one guest the licensing is fine no matter which host it is
used on. However, copying the guest and merely running both the original
and the copy would be out of compliance with the licensing.
