Hi there! I recently installed the 64-bit version of Virtual PC 2007
SP1 on my relatively clean install of Vista SP1 Ultimate x64. When I
went to create a new VM, I noticed the Hardware-Assisted
Virtualization checkbox was unavailable and greyed out. I can't
figure out how to fix this. I'm running Vista on an Abit IP35 Pro
motherboard with an Intel core2duo E6400 cpu, all of which support VT
(And I just checked, VT is, in fact, enabled in the BIOS). Any help
would be greatly appreciated! I'm fairly knew to VPC, I've mostly
used VMWare (versions 5 and 6) in the past.

You need to enable the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization globally within
Virtual PC before you can enable/disable it on a per-VM basis. From the
Virtual PC Console, hit File --> Options, select "Hardware Virtualization",
and enable it. Now you should be enable to enable it within the properties
of any of your VMs. Hope that helps,

I tried that - The option was entirely greyed out in the global
settings. It said 'Hardware Assisted Virtualization is not available
on this computer' or something to that effect.

Through a friend, I have discovered some more info about this.
Apparently the motherboard I own (The Abit IP35 Pro, and several
others) have BIOS issues when enabling VT after coming out of sleep
and warm boots. You must power the box down entirely and do a cold
boot in order for VT to be enabled! Thanks for your help, I
appreciate it. Here's hoping for a better BIOS!

In addition, I discovered that your hardware must support hardware
virtualization. I owned a Toshiba Tablet (M700) that also had this issue. I
discovered that to enable this functionality globally in VPC and before your
control it locally, the following pre-requisites must be met.

* The Processor Family must support this (my M700 did)
* The BIOS must support this (the initial BIOS on the M700 did NOT, and a
few months later, Toshiba put out a BIOS upgrade to enable this feature.
* The BIOS setting must enable using hardware virtualization (the M700's new
BIOS has this setting DISABLED by default, so I had to go into the BIOS and
set it to Enabled).
