Real issues with display size

Message:

I have a laptop running XP Pro SP3 as both guest and host.

At home, I have a docking station and connect the laptop via the
docking station to an external LCD. The laptop automatically adjusts
to a high resolution, which is fine.

When I'm finished in the virtual pc, I reduce the size from full
screen to a window, do a proper shutdown and then shutdown the host OS
on the laptop.

What I've found is when I do this, if I then open the laptop and not
have it hooked up to an external display, I cannot switch the guest to
full screen. I get the message "The virtual machine is using a video
mode that is too large for your monitor. Virtual pc has switched from
full-screen mode back to windowed mode".

Each time, I have to go to display settings and manually change it to
1024x768.

I'm just wondering why I have to do this everytime and is there any
way to avoid having to do this?

Thank you
