I have a p3 dual core 1.8 Ghz processor, 1 gig ram host pc running
windows XP Pro that is fully patched.

I am using virtual pc 2007 amd have installed virtual machine
additions. My guest is also a windows XP Pro that is fully patched.
300 meg of ram has been allocated to the guest.

I find that the guest is always very slow. Just bringing up IE 7
causes the hard drive to spin like crazy before coming up and with
every action, there is a delay. Task manager does not show any hung
processes.

I don't find this issue with the host, only the guest.

Is there anything that can be done to improve the speed of the guest?

Don't you mean a P4 dual core rather than a P3 dual core?

If you can, put the vhd file on a different drive controller from the system
drive. (A second IDE drive as slave on the same IDE cable as the system
drive is not on a different controller.) The idea is to achieve
asynchronious read/writes. I have used a usb external drive effectively in
the past.

on VPC and VMWare). I have had VM's (I forget which exactly) that were
completely unusable without the additions, but ran very well with them.

Just checking ...

I'm sure more RAM would help, but XP should run with 300MB.

I did bump the ram up to 500 meg which helped. I would have thought
there should have been no issues with what I had previously.

I have reinstalled the addons. I'm just curious, is there a way to
tell if they were previously installed or not?
