I'm trying to re-create my live WinME machine in a virtual machine on my new
XP computer. Doing a new install isn't an option for me. I use Acronis True
Image to backup my WinME machine, so my strategy is to boot the virtual PC
from my TI rescue disk and restore the latest WinME backup onto the virtual
hard drive. Other folks have reported success with this in the Acronis forum.
However, I've run into a snag...

Since my old system doesn't have a CD burner, I created the Acronis rescue
disk on a 100MB zip disk. However, there doesn't seem to be a way to force
the virtual machine to boot from a zip drive. I tried disconnecting host
machine's physical FDD with hopes that the virtual machine would then see the
zip drive as a FDD. No go.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

PS: failing any possibility of booting from zip drive inside the VM, is
there a software utility that would convert my existing rescue zip disk to a
rescue floppy disk or ISO CD image?

Unfortunately I can't create a new rescue media because something happened
to my True Image installation (error: Rescue Media Builder not installed).

Since I still have my product key, I'm going to call Acronis tomorrow and
see if there's a way to get another copy of the software so I can restore its
full functionality. That would allow me to create a Rescue CD on my new
system, which has a CD burner.

But it would be MUCH simpler if someone knows how to get VPC to boot from
the zip drive. If that's not possible, then the sooner I find that out, the
sooner I can move on to the more painful solutions.

I got an even bigger issue now. It seems that each problem I solve only
uncovers another...

I'm trying to mount a live OS (WinME) in my virtual machine. Others have
done this using VPC, as reported from time to time in the Acronis users
forum. In most cases a repair install of the O/S is required to sort out any
issues with drivers.

But I can't even get the Acronis Rescue disk to see the virtual hard drive I
linked to the virtual machine. When I boot from the Rescue Disk, it only sees
the FDD (A:) and a drive referred to as "CD Drive (C:)"which is presumably
the virtual CD ROM drive.

I realize this is more of an Acronis issue, but most of the folks in the
Acronis forum have no knowledge of VPC. Hopefully someone over here will
understand what's going on. It's probably something very basic I've missed.

If the host thought it was a floppy drive, the guest could see it, right?

When I was still using ZIPs, there were options in the drive setup software
to make the ZIP appear to the OS as either a large floppy or as a hard disk.
You turned this option on and rebooted and the drive just looked like a
floppy or hard disk. Mind that my ZIPs were all IDE attached. I don't know
if this option existed/exists for USB or parallel port drives.

Yes, so long as it's an internal ATAPI Zip drive...

It doesn't - the only way for a guest to see those is through normal
networking protocols...
