I am running VPC 2007 on Vista Business with XP SP2 in the VM. If I run the
Intel NIC as my network connection, I can't see a thing, and get the default
IP address. If I select NAT instead (intuitively wrong), I can access the
Internet, but can't see my LAN and can't join the domain (can't see the DC).
Can't see the DHCP server either, so have to configure static info.

This seems pretty basic. Never encountered issues like this with VMWare. Any
thoughts as to what I might be doing wrong?

Shared Networking (NAT) will not do what you want. It is basically like
ICS, and you will get an IP in a private network. You will not be able to
see a DHCP server on the LAN.

Setting the vm to use the physical NIC in the host should do what you
want. It should get its network config from DHCP on the LAN and behave just
like a separate machine on the LAN. The fact that it doesn't get its donfig
from the LAN DHCP server means something is wrong, probably with the
interaction between VMNS and the NIC driver in the host.

Have you tried manually configuring it in a similar way to the host?
Perhaps it is just access to DHCP which is failing. Routing might work
correctly if you do a manual config to put it in the same IP subnet as the
LAN machines and use the same gateway and DNS addresses.

Yes, as I stated, I didn't expect NAT was the answer, but I am grasping at straws here. Yes, I did try a static address in case DHCP was the culprit.

Right now, I have two NIC's configured in the VM. One the Intel emulator with a static address, and the other using the NAT connection. I can connect to the Internet, but any attempts to join the domain fails immediately saying it cannot find the DC.

I really must ask why you have two NICs in the vm. What networks are

Yes, that sort of problem is almost always a problem with the driver for
the NIC in the host OS. Virtual Machine Network Services has to interact
with the driver for the physical NIC to get the networking between virtual
and physical networks going.
