Can you run virtual machines from an external USB drives?

Hi Folks,

Could anyone clarify whether virtual machines can be stored and run from an
external USB drive attached to the main PC?

My laptop has 2Gb of RAM but is rather low on hard disk space. Luckily I
have a 120Gb laptop hard drive in an external enclosure which I attach to
the laptop through a USB port.

I've installed VPC 2007 on the laptop and I created a virtual machine on the
external drive with a 20Gb disk size. I then tried to install Centos 5.1 but
without success. Both times the installation ran right through to the end
but the o/s failed to boot up :(

I then managed to clear some space on my laptop's hard drive and repeated
the process. This time the installation was a complete success.

Unfortunately I'm desperately short of space on my laptop so keeping the VHD
there permanently is not an option as I need the space! I've run diags on
the external hard drive and no errors have been detected.

So - is using external USB drives in this way supported with Virtual PC2007?
