I have a dual core pc, 1 gig ram and am running windows xp pro as both
host and guest.
I have allocated 300 meg of ram to the guest pc.

I find that if I am watching video on the guest, both the audio and
video lag quite a bit, making it impossible to view a video.

I would have thought 300 meg of ram should be sufficient. Do I need
to allocate more, or are there other settings to improve the quality
of the video so that you can't tell the difference between watching on
guest or host?

I don't think you can ever get as good performance of something like a
video in a Virtual Machine due to the emulated video card and
emulation in general. Video is best done with real hardware.

Hi,

Do you have the "hardware virtualization enabled" setting in the guest
settings enabled or disabled? If it's enabled, try setting it to
disabled/unchecked.

My situation may be kind of opposite from yours, but when I have any
guests running with that setting enabled, if I start things like a DVD
player, etc. on the host, it just hangs. As soon as I close the guests,
or set that setting to disabled on all running guests, DVD playing is
fine.

Also, I noted that when I start Win2K guests with that enabled, the
video on the guest itself is very slow. For example, instead of the
Win2K startup page just appearing, it paints, very slowly. So now, I've
made sure that setting is disabled on all of my guests.

And, yes, I have VM Additions installed on all guests.

My machine has an Athlon X2 5200+ CPU and I'm running Win2K3 Server
Enterprise as the host OS.

what if you enable remote desktop on the guest and use mstsc /con to connect
to the guest?

For some application local use of mstsc on vm does speed up video and audio.
