How to connect a client in Virtual PC to server in the host PC?

Source: microsoft.public.virtualpc

Message:

I've got an app that functions as a server (receives connections) that
requires a lot of proprietary hardware support. So, I've got to run this app
in the real PC.

I want to connect to the sever running in the host (real) PC using a client
running in the guest (virtual) PC.

At this point, I have tried configuring the virtual PC to use NAT or a real
NIC (one that's plugged online) in the real PC. When I try to ping the
address of the real NIC, I get no response.

I have verified by installing the client app on another physical PC that the
server accepts connections and performs as expected over the LAN. Now, I
want to do this all in one box, using virtual PC.

How can I configure the guest and host so that the guest can ping the host?
I think if I got that far, the rest would function.

Thanks for your help!

Karl

For what it's worth, the app is Rockwell Software's RSLinx.

I want to use it as a "gateway"

It's basically a server for a bunch of hardware drivers to communicate with
industrial devices.
Apps in the same os talk to RSLinx, which talks to the devices.

In "Gateway" mode, RSLinx will accept a connection from another instance of
RSLinx (in another box)--call it the client.
Once the client finds the gateway, the client can connect to and use all of
the industrial devices connected to the gateway.

The client install of RSLinx only needs LAN functionality--it does not need
any of the many, many proprietary hardware devices supported by the gateway.
