unfortuneately yes, it looks for the device, not whats in it, but I havnt
given up yet

Depends how it does the checking...

If it tries to talk to the USB key directly, then I'd say you have no chance
of getting it to work...

If, however, it's just looking for a licence file on the USB key, and you
are able to configure the app to point to the location of the file which it
needs to check, then I'd say it almost certainly will work...

At the risk of sounding patronising, what happened when you tried...?

If it's specifically looking for a USB device, then you're wasting your time
because VPC doesn't support USB devices natively...

Unless you can find some other method of doing the checking, this will never
work...

An alternative solution would be to use VMWare, as this does support USB
natively...
